On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Austrian Art Restitution Act in 2023, all institutions that are working with the Commission for Provenance Research on the basis of the this law were invited at the end of 2021 by the management of the Volkskundemuseum Wien to contribute to this project.
The call was addressed to the managers of the following institutions:
Art Collections of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
Albertina
Museum of Military History
Furniture Museum Vienna
Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna
Leopold Museum
Museum of Applied Arts
mumok - Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna
Natural History Museum Vienna
Austrian Gallery Belvedere
Austrian National Library
Technical Museum Vienna
Theater Museum Vienna
Vienna University Library
Weltmuseum Vienna
All 16 museums, libraries and collections have prepared audio, video as well as illustrated text material for the virtual gallery.
Between January 20th and April 18th, the various contributions are being released one by one. The series concludes with the Volkskundemuseum’s own item. The publication of each contribution is announced on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The virtual gallery is part of a larger project on Nazi provenance research and restitution practice at the Volkskundemuseum Wien. The project includes as a centre piece the exhibition "Collected at any cost! Why Objects Came to the Museum through National Socialism and How We Deal with Them". It will open on April 21st, 2023. The virtual gallery will be included in this exhibition and will be accessible through its own media station.
