This is particularly true for migrant groups that are most easily classified as different or ‘othered’ due to their visible ethnic and religious identifiers, such as Southeast Asian Muslims in the U.K. or Turkish Muslims in Austria and Germany. But as German-language migrant writers such as the Russian-German author Lena Gorelik and the Croatian-German author Jagoda Marinić have made clear in their essayistic prose and fiction, even first and second-generation migrants who pass as white Europeans often find themselves entangled in expectations of gratitude from the majority culture of their host country, and are forced to negotiate a complex heritage of gratitude and resentment passed down in their own families.
Using literary quotes along with creative writing and role-playing exercises to reflect on a variety of experiences, this workshop explores how discourses of gratitude shape the migrant experience and can be used and subverted for the empowerment and creative re-imagination of marginalized communities.
