How does a right-wing authoritarian government gain legitimacy and support in society? And what options are available to dissenters in an increasingly authoritarian environment? It is these two critical questions we propose to discuss based on several years of (both joint and separate) ethnographic research in Hungary since the country’s authoritarian turn in 2010. In relation to popular support, we will emphasize the strategic alignment of the state with dominant values, a selective politics of care that offered solutions to pressing social problems, and state-enabled clientelism as a means of garnering loyalty in rural areas. In relation to dissent, we will highlight the ways in which solidarity groups and activists have been involved in the regeneration of social responsibility and public discourse, with particular reference to the experience of municipalism in the capital city.
